Sailing and Angling
Mullingar is surrounded by large and prolific limestone lakes. These include Lough Owell, Ennell, MountDalton and Sheelin. The river angler can fish along the Inny, Brosna and Deel. Open season extends March to September.

A small friendly club situated at Lough Owel just outside Mullingar. The water quality is excellent as the lake forms the reservoir for Mullingar water supply. Facilities include clubhouse, hard standing and launching slipway. Adult and junior training programs are run annually.
Lough Ennell | Good trout fishing with good hatches of buzzers, mayfly and sedges, but can be difficult to rise trout at times. The season runs from 1st of March to 12th of October. Best Times: April – 12th of October with very good fishing in the last two weeks of the season. A Shannon Regional Fisheries Board permit is required and can be purchased online. (3,540 acres 1,434; hectares).
Mount Dalton Lake | This is a small lake in a private estate 8/13kms from Mullingar off the R.392 to Ballymahon. A good supply of brown trout stocked at the fingerling stage and thrive in this rich feeding habitat. There are hatches of olives, chironomids and sedges.
Lough Owel | Good trout fishing with the best periods in April and during the Green Peter in July and in the last few weeks of the season. Shannon Regional Fisheries Board Permit required. This can be bought online. The season runs from 1st of March to the 12th of October. All legitimate angling methods allowed. (2,547 acres; 1,032 hectares). A Shannon Regional Fisheries Board permit is required and is available online. (4,000 acres; 1,620 hectares).
