Sailing Club Mullingar: A small friendly club situated at Lough Owel just outside Mullingar. The water quality is excellent as the lake forms the reservoir for Mullingar water supply. Facilities include clubhouse, hard standing and launching slipway. Adult and junior training programmes are run annually. Telephone+353 (0)44 934 2058

Angling in the lakelands: Mullingar is surrounded by large and prolific limestone lakes. These include Lough Owell, Ennell, Mount Dalton and Sheelin. The river angler can fish along the Inny, Brosna and Deel. Open season extends March to September.

Lough Ennell: Good trout fishing with good hatches of buzzers, mayfly and sedges, but can be difficult to rise trout at times. The season runs from 1st of March to 12th of October. Best Times: April – 12th of October with very good fishing in the last two weeks of the season. A Shannon Regional Fisheries Board permit is required and can be purchased online. (3,540 acres 1,434; hectares)

Mount Dalton Lake:This is a small lake in a private estate 8/13kms from Mullngar off the R.392 to Ballymahon.A good suppy of brown trout stocked at the fingerling stage and thrive in this rich feeding habitat. There are hatches of olives, chironomids and sedges.

Lough Owel: Good trout fishing with the best periods in April and during the Green Peter in July and in the last few weeks of the season. Shannon Regional Fisheries Board Permit required. This can be bought online. The season runs from 1st of March to the 12th of October. All legitimate angling methods allowed. (2,547 acres; 1,032 hectares)

Course Fishing:The canal encircles the town of Mullingar and there are coarse fish in all sections of the Canal. The most predominant species are Tench of 3lbs to 4lbs with the occasional larger fish present. There are also Bream, Perch and Pike. Noted areas around Mullingar are Kilpatrick's Bridge, Ballinea Bridge, the Harbour at Pipers Boreen.  Fishing can be good in the harbour areas. Around Ballinea Bridge is generally a good stretch. There is a possibility of a Specimen Rudd at the 'Deep Hole' off Patrick's Street in the direction of Athlone. There are good stocks of pike, some to double figures.
